Orlando SharesI am often moved by the generosity of our residents and their willingness to help those in need. Our City’s culture of caring and service is one of its greatest strengths.

As we enjoy another holiday season filled with the hustle and bustle of shopping, parties and decorations, I want to remind everybody that the holidays are also a great time to help those less fortunate. Many of our Central Florida neighbors are in need this year. In the spirit of the season, we are launching ORLANDO SHARES, a community campaign to encourage every resident and business to do what they can to make someone else’s holidays a little brighter.

Here are a few ways to show that ORLANDO SHARES:

Mayor Buddy Dyer’s State of Downtown Address

On October 24th, I delivered the annual State of Downtown Address.

If you weren’t able to make it to the event in-person, you can watch it on the City’s web site by clicking on the link below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5xXr8S2ZDg

State of Downtown is my opportunity to give our community a progress report on our collective effort to reshape and revitalize Central Florida’s urban core. This year’s speech was inspired by the book, “For the Love of Cities” by Peter Kageyama. The book is based on the idea that cities (and downtowns) that are able to bring about a greater emotional connection with their residents benefit both socially and economically.

Highlights from the 2011 State of Downtown event include:

The Lake Eola Fountain Show: Beginning tonight, daily jazz shows will run at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. featuring choreographed water, light and sound shows for attendees. On November 11, 2011, for Veterans Day and on other holidays there will be a patriotic water, light and sound show in place of the regular jazz show.

Orlando Central Station: With SunRail set to begin rolling in just a few years, Downtown Orlando’s LYNX Central Station stop will soon be Central Florida’s transit hub. RIDA Development announced that they are moving ahead with plans to transform the property adjacent to the LYNX Central Station into a 200-million dollar mixed use development that integrates retail shops, residential units and green space into a walk-able village connected to a SunRail stop. The project, called “Central Station,” will be a national model for sustainable, transit-oriented development. It will create hundreds of much-needed jobs and encourage new economic activity along the Orange Avenue corridor.

Why I Love Orlando: Earlier this month, 150 residents participated in a workshop aimed at creating a simple, organic movement to: make people more cognizant of why they choose to live in Orlando; and start a public conversation about ways we can make our city more lovable. To get involved in the “Why I Love Orlando” effort, go to the group’s Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/WhyILoveOrlando

I hope you remain as excited and optimistic as I am about the future of our City - and the future of Downtown Orlando.

Dyer: Orlando Has Lots to Offer Relocating Businesses

For the last several weeks, we have been talking about how the City of Orlando is in the best financial shape of any major city in Florida.

I want to pass along a piece from the Orlando Business Journal that illustrates the important connection between well-run, fiscally-responsible government and the private sector’s ability to create jobs:

Orlando Sentinel My Word - Pensions

I want to pass along a “My Word” column I wrote that appeared in the Orlando Sentinel today.

Pensions for public employees and the burden they place on taxpayers is a hot topic across the country right now. I took the time to write the piece because I think it’s important that our residents know that their City government has worked hard to lessen this burden and make the City of Orlando's pension program a model for others.

You can read the column by clicking the link below:

Orlando Small Business Defense Procurement Summit

This week, I partnered with U.S. Senator Bill Nelson to host a day-long summit aimed at giving Orlando’s Small Businesses new tools to help them secure contracts with the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Orlando Small Business Defense Procurement Summit drew 500 small business owners from around Central Florida and featured presentations by Cecilia Muñoz, Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of White House Intergovernmental Affairs and Dr. Ashton B. Carter, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology & Logistics.

The event is part of a larger effort by the White House and the Defense Department to encourage more small businesses to pursue DOD contracts and give those businesses a greater understanding of how to interact with the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal contracting agencies. The event also included panel discussions with federal contractors and provided Orlando’s small businesses with the opportunity to engage in matchmaking sessions with major prime contractors and government contracting officials.

The event is featured on the White House Blog at:

Siemens

On Tuesday, I had the great privilege of visiting with some of the nearly 3,500 Central Florida residents who work at the Orlando headquarters of Siemens.

Our friends at Siemens invited me there to help launch the company’s Diversity Week Celebration. At the event, I had the chance to meet with many of the men and women who work in the company’s energy division. I participated in a lively question and answer session with employees. I even got to tour the Siemens Orlando campus in an electric vehicle!

It was a great event – and I can’t thank Siemens enough for the invitation to share in their diversity celebration. Read more...

Message from the Mayor

In 2009, the City of Orlando launched Strengthen Orlando, a local effort to generate jobs and help residents and small businesses "weather the storm" during the national recession. Through the Strengthen Orlando initiative, 900 jobs have been created by expediting $180 million in capital improvement projects and 600 jobs have been created by expediting the planning and review process for any commercial project that creates ten or more jobs.

At the April 11, 2011 City Council Workshop, the Orlando City Council and Mayor Dyer confirmed our commitment to assisting our City's small businesses during these challenging economic times. Read more...
